Lecture 1: Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment of Halitosis
Halitosis is among the main reasons why patients seek dental care. Yet, to date, there is limited knowledge and understanding on this common problem. A number of topics will be covered, starting with the current facts on halitosis, followed by an overview of oral and non-oral causes of oral malodor. Discussion will follow on the importance of both medical and dental histories. The role of dietary habits on oral malodor will also be presented and discussed. In addition, attendees will be familiarized with the psychosocial factors related to this condition (e.g., halitophobia). Participants will be able to learn the available methods and techniques for the assessment and diagnosis of halitosis in a clinical setting. Finally, treatment and clinical management options for the halitosis patient will also be presented.
Objectives: (1) Prepare dental professionals to discuss this important aspect of dentistry with their patients; (2) Help prepare dental professionals identify issues related to halitosis through the use of a simple patient questionnaire; (3) Develop a straightforward algorithm for diagnosing and treating patients with oral malodor.
