Lecture 2: Diagnosis and Treatment of Peri-Implant Diseases
This topic will be initially approached by tracing a parallel between periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases. Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis will be discussed in detail. Although being less common than periodontitis, peri-implantitis can happen in a small subset of individuals. Early detection of alveolar bone loss around dental implants is critical for long-term implant success. This presentation will review the etiology of peri-implant diseases. In addition, all known risk indicators will be discussed. Finally, the options of treatment for the various clinical situations will be presented.
Objectives: (1) Present the evidence on the prevalence of peri-implant diseases; (2) Discuss relevant clinical and radiographic information to diagnose peri-implant diseases; (3) Review all currently known risk indicators for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis; (4) Present all available preventive and more involved treatment strategies for peri-implant diseases.
